CRC Hosts CA Controller Candidate Herb Morgan

Members hear directly from a statewide office candidate in the 2026 election

On Thursday, February 26, over 100 CRC members and invited guests had the opportunity to hear from the first candidate running for a statewide office to be hosted by CRC. Herb Morgan is running as a Republican for California Controller — one of 8 statewide Constitutional Officers elected to executive positions in California (including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

CRC strongly believes that fiscal responsibility should never be a partisan issue, and the Club greatly appreciated Herb Morgan’s very informative discussion on what a State Controller is supposed to do, and why he believes he’s the best candidate for the position.

Members learned about the “powerful and consequential” — and independent — role the State Controller has in California. Below is an informative letter published by Herb Morgan on the role and his plan.

Of note, Herb Morgan became the first political candidate in U.S. history to publish all of his campaign transactions “on-chain” with daily verified updates. This very interesting and tangible act of transparency strongly resonated with CRC members in attendance and generated thoughtful discussions on the technology and how it could be used in government to eliminate waste, fraud, and mismanagement of taxpayer funds.

CA State Controller: The Most Powerful and Consequential of California’s Constitutional Offices — and the Key to Fixing California

California hemorrhages billions to fraud, waste, and mismanagement

By Herb Morgan,

California Globe, February 10, 2026

California boasts the fourth-largest economy on Earth (GDP exceeding $4.1 trillion, behind only the U.S., China, and Germany), yet the state hemorrhages billions to fraud, waste, and mismanagement. In this broken system, the California State Controller stands as the most powerful and consequential of the constitutional offices—not in succession order, but in sheer ability to wield influence, enact reforms, expose theft, and reshape fiscal policy

Elected every four years as a constitutional officer (California Constitution, Article 5, Section 11), the Controller operates with rare independence from the Governor and Legislature. No other statewide office combines:

  • Direct veto-like control over disbursing every state dollar,

  • Sole independent audit authority over spending entities,

  • Seats on boards overseeing hundreds of billions in pensions and tax enforcement.

This immensely powerful toolkit gives the Controller unique leverage to root out corruption, demand accountability, and force systemic change—if led by someone with the skill and fortitude to use it. In a state with annual budgets topping $325 billion, this office could be the decisive force to restore the public trust.

Making a Difference

Fall 2025 Food Donation to the Food Pantry in Imperial Beach

On Thursday, October 30, the Coronado Republican Club delivered donated food items to the Neighborhood Food Pantry in Imperial Beach. CRC donations filled three entire folding tables with much appreciated non-perishable food. Many thanks to all of our CRC Members who donated generously and made a tremendous difference, and to the Coronado Rotary Club for spearheading this giving opportunity!

The Pantry distributes free food to hundreds of local low income families, enlisted service members' families, homeless individuals, and elder adults living in IB. We were told at the drop off that on just one day last week, over 80 individuals were assisted at the Pantry — a record high number. The need for assistance is great. Well done CRC Members for stepping up and supporting the Pantry.

Coronado Candlelight Vigil for Charlie Kirk

On Sunday, September 14th, our community gathered at Spreckles Park for a heartfelt vigil honoring Charlie Kirk. Nearly 300 friends and neighbors,  young and old, stood side by side, united in prayer, reminding us of the love that binds us through times of sorrow.

Our deepest thanks to Father Michael Murphy for the opening prayer and Dr. Steve Cohen, Charlie’s eye doctor, for his compassionate memories of the Kirk family, local residents who just wanted to share, along with the closing thoughts and prayers by Pastor Jim Baize.
